A National Facility for Gravitational Biology Experiments

The Life Sciences Division at NASA Ames operates the Center for Gravitational Biology Research (CGBR) to support experiments involving artificial gravity. The CGBR is comprised of centrifuges ranging from 1 foot in diameter for cell experiments, to centrifuges large enough for people to live on board. There are also specialized linear sleds and a multi-axis centrifuge to support neuroverstibular experiments, as well as a 12 bed facility for human bedrest studies. The Center is also available to support other types of scientific investigations, performed by researchers inside and outside of NASA, that require an altered acceleration environment. These facilities, declared a national resource by the NASA Administrator in 1992, are available for use by the international science community.
