Operational Characteristics:
- Acute or chronic exposures to 180 G
- Cell, tissue, and small organism payloads
- Controlled atmosphere
The 1-Foot Diameter Centrifuge is designed to test the effects of hypergravity
on cultured cells and small organisms. This system consists of a standard table
top centrifuge equipped with a GH-3.8 rotor. The rotor has platforms that swing
out to a maximum radius of 6.4 inches. The centrifuge has been modified to control
speeds from 45-1000 rpm (1.4-180 X Earth Gravity) and to circulate air from the
chamber of an adjacent water-jacketed tissue culture incubator. The incubator is
used to control temperature, CO2, O2, and humidity in the centrifuge. The incubator also can be
bypassed to provide an ambient environment in the centrifuge. An identical incubator
is located nearby for stationary controls.
The temperature, CO2, and relative humidity in the centrifuge are monitored using
sensors and a remote data acquisition system. The
sample carriers consist of 4 microtitre plate platforms, each measuring 5.25 in. X 3.5 in.
The carriers accommodate 96-well microtitre dishes or other dishes of similar size.
The sample mass cannot exceed 215 grams on each of the platforms.
